Here’s something a lot of couples don’t think about until they’re deep in the planning process: you’re going to spend a significant chunk of your wedding day getting ready. For most brides, we’re talking four to six hours. That’s a long time to be in a space — and the energy of that space will ripple through your entire day.

I’ve seen brides cramped into tiny rooms, fighting for mirror space, eating food that tastes vaguely of dry shampoo, and feeling stressed before the ceremony even begins. I’ve also seen brides in beautiful, calm, light-filled spaces, laughing with their people, feeling genuinely unhurried.

The difference is huge. And it’s something we thought very hard about when we designed The Era’s Luxury Bridal Loft.

What actually matters in a getting-ready space

When you’re evaluating a bridal suite at any venue, here’s what to actually look at — not just whether it’s pretty:

• Enough stations for your whole party. If you have six bridesmaids plus yourself and only three mirrors, someone is sitting in a hallway. The Era has six full hair and makeup stations, each with individual lighting and outlets.
• Natural light. This matters for your hair and makeup (so you can see what it actually looks like) and it matters for your photos. Getting-ready photos in a dim, artificial-light room look very different from photos in a space with good windows. The bridal loft at The Era has an abundance of natural light.
• Comfortable seating that’s in the same space. You don’t want your bridesmaids exiled to a waiting room somewhere else. The lounge seating at The Era is in the same space as the stations — so everyone is together during the whole morning.
• A private outdoor space. Sometimes you need five minutes of fresh air. The Era’s bridal loft has a private balcony for exactly that.
• A separate space for food. This one sounds minor until you’ve eaten a croissant that tastes like hairspray. The Era has a separate kitchenette below the loft — so the food stays away from the getting-ready products.
• Privacy. Your getting-ready morning is not a spectator sport. You want a space that’s yours, that guests aren’t wandering through.

How to structure your getting-ready morning

Even with a great space, the morning goes better with a loose plan. Here’s what tends to work:

• Start earlier than you think you need to. Hair and makeup almost always takes longer than estimated, especially if anyone is doing trial looks for the first time on the day.
• Put the bride in the middle of the schedule. This way, the bride’s hair and makeup is freshest for photos but she won’t be rushed if time is short.
• Plan a real breakfast. Not just pastries — something that will actually sustain everyone through a long morning. The separate kitchenette at The Era makes this easy.
• Build in a buffer. There will be a moment when something needs adjusting, someone can’t find their earrings, or a family member needs attention. Buffer time is what keeps this from becoming stressful.
• Leave space for the quiet moments. The dress going on, the first look with your mom, the moment before you walk out. These are the parts you’ll want to feel — not rush.

A note on getting-ready photos

Your photographer is going to spend a lot of time in your getting-ready space. The photos from this part of the day — the details, the candids, the emotional moments — are often some of the most treasured from the whole wedding.

A well-designed space photographs beautifully without your photographer having to work around ugly backgrounds or bad lighting. When we built the bridal loft, we thought about this. The light, the finishes, the space — it’s all designed to be beautiful in photos as much as it is in person.

The groom’s suite

We haven’t forgotten about the other half of the equation. The groom’s suite at The Era gives the guys their own space to get ready without the overlap and chaos that happens when everyone is sharing the same area. A good groom’s suite should feel relaxed — comfortable seating, space to move around, somewhere to do ties and boutonnieres without crowding around a single mirror.

The morning goes better for everyone when both parties have dedicated, functional spaces. It also makes for better photos and a more relaxed wedding party.
